Employees at a factory where labels are manufactured claim they have been informed that their facility will be shut down and operations will be relocated to Central Europe.

Approximately 180 personnel operate at the MCC factory located on the Llantarnam Industrial Estate within Cwmbran, Torfaen, where they manufacture labels for food and beverage products.

The website has been in operation for more than 20 years, but employees have been informed that the company intends to close down operations with tasks being relocated to Poland and Romania.

The corporate entity has been solicited for a statement.

The factory is part of a multinational corporation with facilities located across worldwide, encompassing the Americas, Europe, and Oceania.

In an email to employees, MCC president Fred Noel stated: "This was a challenging but required decision that reflects changes in local requirements."

We are currently collaborating closely with the local team and customers to evaluate available choices, and if necessary, reprioritize product distribution to other locations.

The Minister of Employment and Labour has officially stated that the National Minimum Wage (NMW) will increase to R28.79 for the year 2025, a rise from the previous rate of R27.58 per standard hour worked.

The Minister of Employment and Labour, Nomakhosazana Meth, has announced an increase in the National Minimum Wage for 2025, raising it from 27.58 rand to 28.79 rand per hour worked. This adjustment represents a 4.2 percent increase and seeks to improve the economic stability of workers in South Africa.

'The implementation of the National Minimum Wage Act, which came into effect in 2019, has been a crucial aspect of South Africa's labor market reforms. This law requires employers to compensate employees at a minimum threshold, ensuring that no worker is paid less than the rate set by law. As part of the government's commitment to social protection programs, the NMW will undergo annual reviews, with the next adjustment enforceable from 1 March 2025," Meth stated.

The introduction and implementation of the National Minimum Wage is of great importance to us, as it guarantees that employees receive their fair compensation for their work.

She mentioned that the upcoming adjustment acknowledges the economic challenges faced by many workers. “Affecting all employees, the National Minimum Wage also includes vulnerable groups, such as farm and domestic workers, who have been linked to the NMW rates since 2022.”

While strict adherence to the National Minimum Wage (NMW) is required, exceptions do exist. Workers employed under the Expanded Public Works Programme will see an increase from $1.03 to $1.08 per hour. Those engaged in learnership agreements, as outlined in the Skills Development Act per hour, will receive allowances as determined by the latest government issue. Additionally, the National Minimum Wage Act does not apply to volunteers or specific government agencies such as the South African National Defence Force and the National Intelligence Agency.

"This digital resource aims to keep employers and employees informed about their rights and responsibilities related to the National Minimum Wage," Meth said.
